Labiaplasty revision: surgeon's fee $21,500 to $25,500. A labiaplasty revision corrects another surgeon's result: asymmetry, too much or too little tissue removed, a dog ear, a sharp edge or a painful scar. Scar tissue and less remaining tissue make it a harder operation, so it costs more and is quoted individually after Dr. Cat has examined you. Surgical Techniques and How They Affect Price

Two techniques account for most labiaplasties in the United States. The trim technique removes the excess tissue along the free edge of the labia minora and closes the new edge; it is the more common of the two, removes darkened edges along with the excess, and allows a quicker recovery. Read the fine print: the ASPS figure is the surgeon's fee only. It excludes anesthesia, the operating room, supplies and follow-up visits, and it averages every surgeon who reports, in every market, doing every version of the procedure. What Goes Into the Cost of a Labiaplasty?

1. Consultation fee

Many "free" consultations are with a coordinator or a nurse, not the surgeon. A consultation with Dr. Cat is with Dr. Cat: she examines you, reviews labiaplasty photographs with you to pin down the size and shape you want, and draws your surgical plan. 2. Surgeon's fee

6. Medications and labs

Pre-operative labs and any physician clearance are billed by the lab or your doctor and are often covered by insurance even for cosmetic surgery. Afterward you will use an antibiotic ointment, and most of Dr. Cat's patients manage with Tylenol and ice rather than prescription pain medication.

7. Follow-up visits

Location changes the price of a labiaplasty more than almost any other factor, through the cost of running a practice in a given city and through what the surgeons in that city do. Published price lists put a labiaplasty in Florida at about $2,500 to $10,000 and in Los Angeles at about $2,500 to $17,000, with the top of the California range in Beverly Hills, where specialist practices quote $25,000 and above. Labiaplasty Cost in Mexico, Turkey and Abroad

A labiaplasty in Tijuana, Istanbul, Bogotá, Santo Domingo or Bangkok is advertised at a fraction of the American price. The price is possible because the surgeon's time, the anesthesia and the facility all cost less, and because there is often no follow-up at all: you fly home within days, and the surgeon who operated on you is not the one who sees the wound separate when the sutures dissolve at three to four weeks, or the asymmetry appear as the swelling goes down.

With a labiaplasty the stakes are specific. The most common complication, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is over-resection, and removed tissue does not grow back; some over-resected results can be improved by a specialist and some cannot be fully corrected by anyone. A complication after surgery abroad is treated at home at emergency-room prices, and a correction is a labiaplasty revision, a $21,500 to $25,500 surgeon's fee with Dr. Cat, more than the original surgery would have cost done well. Does Insurance Cover Labiaplasty?

Almost never. Labiaplasty is classified as an elective cosmetic procedure, so insurance does not cover the surgeon's fee, the anesthesia or the facility, and the prices on this page are self-pay prices. Chafing, irritation, pain with exercise or intercourse and difficulty wearing swimsuits or leggings are real problems, and most carriers still classify the surgery as cosmetic.

The exception is a functional case. When a patient has documented chronic symptoms such as persistent pain, recurrent infections or functional impairment, a carrier may review the claim and occasionally approve partial coverage, usually of a reduction rather than the aesthetic reshaping. The review takes a letter of medical necessity from a physician, records that show the symptoms over time and the conservative measures tried first, and photographs; even then, approval is uncommon. • Help at home. Someone should drive you home and stay the first night, and it helps to have someone around for the first few days.
• Supplies. Pads, antibiotic ointment, ice packs, a peri bottle, loose cotton underwear and a donut cushion: tens of dollars, not hundreds.
